Expressive Arts Therapy 8 – Week Program

The Gatehouse Expressive Arts Therapy Group Program

An 8-week expressive arts therapy group where survivors who have completed The Gatehouse Phase 1 program come together to engage in various creative activities as a means of self-expression, personal exploration, and mutual support. It is a group-based approach to therapy that incorporates different art forms, including visual arts, incorporating music, movement, and self-reflective writing or poetry. It encourages individuals to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a non-judgmental and creative way, promoting healing, personal growth, and self-discovery.

In this expressive arts group, participants have the opportunity to express themselves creatively, share their experiences, and engage in artistic activities in a supportive and non-judgmental environment. The group setting offers a sense of community and belonging, as individuals come together with shared goals and the opportunity to connect with others who have similar experiences.

Program Structure:  This is a closed group process (intake required) and no new participants are added to the group beyond the second week. 8-week all-gender identities expressive arts therapy support group led by CREATE Institute Practicum Student(s) and a Gatehouse Peer Facilitator.

Topics Include

  1. Grounding
  2. Boundaries, Building Trust, and Building Safety with self and others
  3. Emotional Awareness, Regulation, & Expression
  4. Exploring Uncomfortable Emotions
  5. Letting Go – Expectations vs Reality

Risks/Benefits: The Expressive Arts Therapy Group engages in discussions that may include individuals sharing their experiences with triggers, inner child, addictions, boundaries, shame/guilt, and moving forward. These discussions may include sharing individual perceptions and core beliefs. As with any group support self-exploration process, such activities may bring up feelings of fear, sadness, and anxiousness in the group process. It is strongly recommended that program participants have a support network outside of The Gatehouse including other peers, therapy or social work support.
